Sounds more like they decided Bret needed a submission hold, somebody said "You should use Sting's finisher." and the only complicated part was coming up with a name. If he hadn't been around to teach Bret Hart that complicated move he never would have figured it out. Originally posted by Jamie Green from MD: Riki Choshu came up with the move prior to Sting. Sting was definitely using it as a finisher before Bret was.īret mentioned years ago in an interview that his finish was the piledriver but in the land of giants (WWF) he couldn't perform the move the every wrestler. Probably depends on which fed they saw first, so maybe it was mostly the other way around. I forget why Konnan was there (pre-Max Moon), but it was all explained logically in his book.ĭid the fans see it as a scorpian deathlock rip-off Konnan was actually the one who taught it to him. The office wanted him to use a submission move as his finish. It seems like it would be simple to put on but weird that some people are terrible at it. I always liked his sharpshooter as it looked like it hurt when he sat back. I wasn't watching regularly when he got his first push but I remember him talking about using a tombstone piledriver before he was told to use the sharpshooter. I first remember him using the Sharpshooter in a match against Haku on Superstars in April 1991. Did the fans see it as a scorpian deathlock rip-off, and would Bret have been more/less succesful if he had a different finisher?īret used the piledriver as a finisher during his singles stint in 1988/89. So some questions did he use it in a tag match, if so what was the first time? Did he use it prior to the WWF? What alternatives do you think were considered and did he try any different ones before settleing on the sharpshooter (eg HBK used something else before the superkick- a belly to back suplex I think?). If anything it seemed that his solo finishing move was more often than not a small package. Most of his "5 moves of doom" were already in his standard set while he was in the Hart Foundation but I can't remember seeing him pull out the sharpshooter in a tag match. It seems clear that the WWF were always going to push Bret fairly decently as a singles wrestler at some point. I've been watching a fair few Hart Foundation maches/angles lately.
